What is copyright?
Copyright
is a type of legal protection for authors of original
works, both published and unpublished.
What is protected by copyright?
Copyright, which falls
under the intellectual property law, protects the authors
of original works. These include literary, musical, and
artistic works such as poetry, movies, songs, novels,
computer software and architecture. Copyright does not
protect concepts, ideas and mode of operation per se;
it may, however, protect the way these ideas, concepts
etc are expressed.
When
is it an infringement of copyright?
An
infringement of copyright arises when a copyrighted work
is replicated or performed publicly without seeking the
permission of the copyright owner.
What is the difference between copyright and a patent/trademark?
A patent protects inventions
and discoveries while copyright protects the author of
original works. A trademark protects words, letters, phrases,
numerals, design, and paintings etc.
Is
copyright protection automatic? If so, why is there a
need to register?
Your
work is protected by copyright the moment it is created.
However, copyright registration is still recommended if
you want to have your copyright on the public record.
